Pope County
Pope County is located in west central Minnesota. It was founded on February 20, 1862. It is named after John Pope, a Union Army General who surveyed this area. Glenwood is the county seat and most populous city. According to 2005 census estimates, this scenic rural county had a population of 11,252 residents, all rural. Thirteen buildings in Pope County are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, most of which represent the Classical Revival and Beaux Arts styles. Todd County
Todd County lies directly northeast of Pope County… very close to the epicenter of Minnesota. It is named for Union Army General and U.S. House of Representatives Delegate from the Dakota Territory, John Blair Smith Todd. The county seat is Long Prairie and as of 2005, had an estimated population of 24,604, 22% urban and 78% rural. Todd County has a total of 10 buildings and structures listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The various buildings feature architectural styles ranging from Classical Revival and Chicago to Moderne, Italianate and Romanesque. Click here to see a listing of these buildings.
